Abrasive Blasting Case Studies GMA PremiumBlast English Global Sustainability
Performance Refined: How a German Blast Specialist Lifted Efficiency with GMA PremiumBlast™
Overview
Project
Abrasive blasting performance test on coated steel bridge components.
Location
Germany
Test Details
Multiple onsite trials were conducted using GMA PremiumBlast™, adjusting nozzle sizes, valve types, and air management to identify the most effective combination for productivity and stability.
Task
Evaluate how GMA PremiumBlast™ performs under different equipment configurations and determine the most efficient setup for the contractor’s existing machines.
Challenge
The contractor was experiencing high abrasive consumption, inconsistent blasting speed, and heavy dust formation. They were unsure whether meaningful improvements were achievable without major equipment changes.
Challenge
The contractor’s existing setup was limiting their efficiency.
Key issues included:
- High abrasive usage
- Reduced blasting speed
- Excessive dust affecting visibility and cleanup
- Air pressure losses and inconsistent abrasive metering.
These inefficiencies increased operational costs and slowed overall project progress.
Solution
GMA partnered directly with the contractor to test several equipment configurations using GMA PremiumBlast™. The focus was not on replacing machines but on finding the right settings for the contractor’s existing equipment. This included:
- Testing different nozzle sizes
- Refining abrasive control
- Checking air volume and pressure stability
- Reviewing valve performance
Small adjustments delivered meaningful improvements — without major equipment changes.
The most efficient and cost-effective maintenance grade garnet abrasive.
Trial Results
The trial achieved measurable, high-impact improvements by refining the blasting setup and process. The optimized approach not only enhanced operational efficiency but also delivered substantial reductions in consumption, cleanup time, and overall project costs.
71%
Less Consumption
Using GMA PremiumBlastTM
Further results revealed the optimized setup produced significant gains, including:
- 34% faster production
- 71% less abrasive consumption (saving 2.4 tonnes)
- More than 60% lower cost per m²
- Cleaner blasting with 34% faster cleanup
“We don’t just deliver garnet — we work through ideas with our customers. By looking at both the abrasive and their equipment setup, we help optimize performance from every angle. This partnership not only improved their efficiency but continues to guide their long-term operations.”
Steffen Glade
Department Manager, GMA Europe
Summary
Through collaborative testing and careful refinement of their setup, the contractor achieved faster, cleaner, and more efficient blasting using PremiumBlast™. The improvements were immediate, practical, and achieved without major equipment upgrades.
The contractor has since adopted PremiumBlast™ for ongoing work.
