The story of a GMA pioneer: Dean Clarke marks 45 years

Few people have witnessed GMA’s growth quite like Dean Clarke.

One of GMA’s pioneer employees, Dean joined the business in its early years as a Plant Operator at Port Gregory in Western Australia. He worked alongside his father, Ray, on a two-person shift, at a time when the operation ran a single shift with a feed rate of just 14 tons per hour.

Over the next 45 years, Dean would see GMA grow from those early beginnings into a global business — and make an important contribution to that growth along the way. This included his involvement in the design and construction of the Hose Wet Plant in 1997 and 1998, a project he remains particularly proud of.

As GMA expanded internationally, Dean’s experience took him well beyond Australia. In 2015, he travelled to the United States, where he spent more than four years helping build new plants and facilities and sharing his knowledge across GMA’s operations in Montana, Oregon and Philadelphia.

Reflecting on his career, Dean says the scale of GMA’s growth is one of the biggest changes he has witnessed.

“When I started, it was a two-man shift with my dad at Port Gregory. To see GMA grow from those early days into the global business it is today has been incredible,” he said.

“I’m proud to have played a part in that journey and to have worked with so many great people along the way.”

Dean credits several people with helping shape his career, particularly his dad, Ray, and Martin Taylor, as well as Torsten Ketelsen and his vision for GMA.

Today, as Global Technical Services Coordinator, Dean continues to share the practical knowledge and experience he has built over more than four decades with teams across GMA.

GMA CEO Stephan Kirsch said Dean’s 45-year milestone reflects an exceptional contribution to the business.

“Dean has been part of GMA’s story almost from the beginning. His knowledge, commitment and willingness to share his experience have made a significant contribution to our operations in Australia and around the world. On behalf of everyone at GMA, I thank Dean for his outstanding service and congratulate him on this remarkable milestone.”
