Safer abrasives
GMA Garnet™ abrasives naturally minimize environmental impact, supporting safer and more sustainable workplaces.

Protecting workers and worksites with safer abrasives
Maintaining a safe worksite is of critical importance, which is why GMA abrasives are designed to significantly reduce health risks. Unlike slag abrasives that may contain hazardous materials, GMA Garnet™ is free from heavy metals and harmful contaminants, ensuring a cleaner, safer worksite. Our lower dust abrasives also enhance overall workplace productivity, improving visibility on the job and reducing the inhalation of harmful heavy metals.

Protecting the environment from hazardous heavy metals
The environmental impact of slag abrasives is a major concern, often containing heavy metals, such as arsenic, barium, beryllium, and chromium. These metals can leach into soil and main water systems, causing long-term environmental damage.
Garnet is a non-toxic, naturally inert mineral, with little to no recordable heavy metals that create worker risks or environmental hazards. Blast with GMA Garnet™ and make the conscious decision to lower the risks for communities, and minimize the environmental impact of blasting operations.

Blast. Return. Reuse.
The GMA Garnet Return Program leads the way in sustainable resource management, offering our customers across the U.S. a cost-effective means to return and repurpose used garnet. GMA restores the garnet to like-new condition, reducing waste and supporting a sustainable future. For more than two decades, this program has diverted tens of thousands of tons of garnet from landfills, reinforcing GMA's commitment to environmental responsibility.

What are the environmental, health, and safety benefits of using GMA Garnet?
GMA Garnet offers significant environmental, health, and safety benefits, including:
Environmental benefits: GMA Garnet is a natural, non-toxic mineral with high recyclability, reducing waste and the environmental footprint of abrasive blasting operations.
Health benefits: Lower dust generation reduces the risk of respiratory issues for workers and minimizes exposure to hazardous substances.
Safety benefits: Improved visibility due to reduced dust levels enhances operational safety, allowing for more precise and efficient blasting. This leads to a cleaner and safer work environment.
How does the GMA Garnet Return Program work?
Customers send used garnet to one of our collection points, and we reprocess the material in one of our state-of-the-art processing plants. Before used garnet can be returned, we must ensure it is environmentally safe to transport and process.
- To ensure all loads of garnet are non-hazardous, a 100-gram sample of used garnet must be tested with a Third-Party Environmental Laboratory for Resource Conservation and Recovery ACT (RCRA 8 Metals) via Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) analysis (RCRA 8 TCLP).
- Next, a sample is submitted to the appropriate GMA laboratory for a Sieve Analysis to determine if the garnet is viable for reprocessing.
- If suitable and safe, GMA will issue a return authorization upon completing a simple Garnet Profile Form.
What does GMA do with the used garnet?
GMA reprocesses the used garnet in the same way as freshly mined garnet, adhering to strict standards and testing protocols to ensure high quality. This process ensures the reused garnet meets the same performance criteria as new garnet. Find out more about garnet reprocessing.
How can GMA be sure of the quality of recycled garnet?
GMA operates laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technology and employs rigorous testing protocols. Additionally, reputable third-party testing is utilized to verify the quality and performance of the reprocessed garnet. This thorough quality control process ensures that the recycled garnet meets the high standards required for effective abrasive blasting. Find out more about garnet reprocessing.
