Slag abrasives assessment reveals potential hazards

Slag abrasives are the byproduct of burning coal or producing metals and can pose a serious risk to human health. When blasted, toxic particles can be released into the air, exposing operators and bystanders to dangerous quantities of heavy metals, such as arsenic, barium, beryllium, and chromium, and other materials found in slag dust.

Alarmingly, an independent qualitative risk assessment of 17 commonly available abrasives found that some slags exceed safe regulatory limits for a number of heavy metals.

Garnet abrasives: the safer alternative

HSE consultants in the United States led an investigation into 21 different abrasives and their testing concluded that GMA Garnet™ is 2.5x safer than waste slag abrasives. To get the details on better abrasive safety and performance, read our Comprehensive Risk Assessment of Abrasive Products.

Why is GMA Garnet™ the safer choice?

no-heavy-metals-slag-displacement

Virtually no heavy metals

Many slags contain heavy metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, nickel, and vanadium, which are released into the air upon impact. GMA Garnet™ has virtually no heavy metals.

OSHA-compliant-slag-displacement

OSHA compliant

Our abrasives are within OSHA’s limits for beryllium and free from toxic heavy metals. By blasting with garnet, maintenance teams can maximize safety without sacrificing performance.

Low-friability-slag-displacement

Low dust

Slags shatter on impact, creating high dust levels and heavy metal contamination. However, GMA abrasives’ low friability produce lower levels of dust for safer, cleaner worksites.

Minimal safety risks-slag-displacement

Minimal safety risks

GMA Garnet™ cuts and cleans surfaces faster than waste slag abrasives. This minimizes worker fatigue with fewer labor hours needed to complete maintenance.

Discover the GMA advantage

GMA Garnet™ is an inert natural mineral with minimal to no worker safety or environmental risks. Our abrasives are made of solid almandine garnet particles, featuring four distinct characteristics — hardness, toughness, density, and angularity.

Almandine garnet’s toughness makes GMA Garnet™ very resistant to further breakdown during blasting, producing less dust than alternatives. It is also a cleaner abrasive. Every bag meets stringent safety standards through rigorous QA and QC at our processing plants, in addition to third-party accreditation.

Switch from coal slag improves working conditions

ZÜBLIN Chimney and Refractory (ZCR) previously relied on coal slag for abrasive blasting projects across Europe and faced high dust emissions and impaired operator visibility. To improve working conditions, ZCR teamed up with GMA and Elcometer for a trial comparing GMA PremiumBlast™ with coal slag.

The trial showed a significant reduction in dust levels, improved visibility, and optimized abrasive consumption. A few months into using GMA PremiumBlast™, ZCR recorded a 75% reduction in abrasive consumption, creating a cleaner and safer workplace for their workers.

Are there specific regulations or guidelines for using garnet and slag abrasives?

Yes, there are strict regulations and guidelines set by organizations like OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to ensure worker safety. Garnet abrasives comply with these standards, whereas slag abrasives often require additional safety measures due to their hazardous content.

Slag abrasives often contain hazardous substances such as heavy metals, including lead and arsenic, which can pose serious health risks to workers through inhalation or skin contact.

In comparison, garnet abrasive is a natural mineral, free of heavy metals and toxic substances. It produces lower dust levels during blasting, significantly reducing the risk of respiratory issues and skin irritation for workers.

Workers using garnet experience fewer health-related problems over time. Long-term health benefits include a lower risk of chronic respiratory conditions and other health issues associated with prolonged exposure to heavy metals and toxins present in slag abrasives.

Garnet abrasives generate significantly less dust compared to slag. This reduction in dust not only minimizes respiratory risks but also improves visibility in the workplace, contributing to overall safety and efficiency.

While all abrasive blasting operations require proper ventilation and dust control, the lower dust levels associated with garnet abrasives mean that these measures can be less intensive compared to those needed for slag abrasives. This contributes to a safer and more cost-effective working environment.
