Qasr Al Watan: A Masterpiece of Marble and Waterjet Cutting Precision

Written by GMA Garnet | 4/29/2025
In the heart of Abu Dhabi, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf, stands Qasr Al Watan — the "Palace of the Nation." More than a working presidential palace, it is a cultural landmark celebrating the spirit, heritage, and ambition of the United Arab Emirates.

Built to host dignitaries, world leaders, and official state functions, Qasr Al Watan was constructed over a period of seven years, from 2010 to 2017. The palace’s grandeur is reflected in its remarkable scale: over one million square meters (10.7 million square feet) of intricate stonework and 22,000 cubic meters (776,922 cubic feet) of delicate decorative elements inspired by Mughal-era design. Every marble inlay, column, and floor medallion required extreme precision — achieved using advanced waterjet cutting technology.

Bringing Vision to Life: Precision in Every Cut

With soaring domes, white granite and limestone facades, and vast marble interiors adorned with traditional Arabian artistry, the scale and intricacy of Qasr Al Watan demanded more than conventional stone cutting methods.

Waterjet cutting  proved essential:

  • Cold cutting process prevented heat damage and micro-cracking in the marble.
  • Fine precision enabled the execution of highly complex patterns and detailed inlays.
  • Minimal material waste helped protect valuable natural resources and contributed to sustainable practices.

However, during the early stages of construction, the project faced significant challenges with cutting inconsistencies, frequent nozzle blockages, machine downtime, and supply issues due to the use of lower-quality garnet abrasives — threatening critical production timelines.

GMA Garnet™: Delivering Quality and Reliability

Recognizing the need for a reliable solution, the search for higher-quality garnet abrasives and technical expertise led to a partnership with GMA Middle East.

“After understanding the challenges and concerns, we conducted a trial using GMA ClassicCut™ 80 garnet paired with the appropriate focusing tube to consistently deliver high-quality cutting results,” said Hemanshu Dawda, Waterjet Manager at GMA Middle East.

The results were immediate and clear. Cutting quality improved significantly, machine downtime was minimized, and overall production efficiency increased.

“The improvement in cutting quality and machine uptime was visible immediately,” shared a key production leader involved with the project at that time.

Delighted with the outcome, the project team entrusted GMA to supply garnet abrasive for the remainder of the prestigious work, with GMA’s support extending beyond just product supply.

“We were able to fulfill their project requirements and orders as and when required to keep their production running because we maintain a consistent supply of garnet abrasive stock and waterjet consumables at our warehouse in Dubai,” Hemanshu added.

GMA’s ability to provide reliable supply, technical expertise, and consistent product quality made a crucial difference in the successful delivery of Qasr Al Watan’s intricate marble craftsmanship.
